In 1960 Bellow went to the University of Puerto Rico for his last temporary appointment. A year later, he returned to the United States and married Susan Classman. In the fall of 1962 he accepted a permanent position as a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. This new job had the double effect of providing him with a steady income while he wrote and bringing him back to the city that had always been at the center of his fiction. Back in Chicago, Bellow celebrated the birth of his third son, Daniel Oscar Bellow, in March 1964.
